Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about learning iPad calligraphy with the ABCs of Procreate? We want to help answer them!

What do I need to learn iPad calligraphy?

In order to learn calligraphy on your iPad, you need an Apple Pencil, an iPad that syncs with the Apple Pencil and the Procreate App.

Syncing with the Apple Pencil is the most important factor when choosing your iPad calligraphy tools, and this ability depends on your iPad model. The recent versions of the iPad, iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad Mini all sync automatically. To see if your model syncs or to help you pick out a new iPad for digital lettering, view our iPad buying guide.

You may want to invest in some more tools as you’re practicing calligraphy more on your iPad, like a screen protector or a finger grip. Here are our favorite iPad accessories for lettering!

Can I use a generic Apple Pencil?

Lettering and calligraphy rely on pressure sensitivity, meaning that you get thin upstrokes when you apply a light touch and thick downstrokes when you write with pressure applied. The best pressure-sensitive utensil on the market in the Apple Pencil, and you can find which one you need on the Apple website (or scroll up on this page to view the supplies list).

Do you have a free iPad calligraphy course?

Yes, we do have a free course that teaches iPad Calligraphy Basics.

If you aren’t able to invest money in your lettering work right now, you can still get free practice sheets, and a free brush out of our custom Procreate brush pack from that course. View it here.

Do I need to pay for the Procreate App?

Yes, the Procreate App comes at a one-time cost of $12.99. While there are alternatives like Photography and Adobe Fresco, Procreate is widely considered to be the best app for digital art (calligraphy art included!) and is the preferred choice for hobbyists and professional digital artists. While there are other apps on the market,

This is actually a positive thing for the digital calligraphy community because specific calligraphy apps wouldn’t receive the same amount of attention and development. This app offers an incredible depth of brush tools (both paid Procreate brushes and free Procreate brushes) developed by artists worldwide.
